You may not be familiar with this incredible oil, but helichrysum oil is known for its ability to relieve mental exhaustion, stress, and mild depression.
Plus, it stimulates the right hemisphere of the brain, which enhances artistic and creative expression. With a strong fruity/straw scent, light yellow to red color and thin texture, this aromatic herb makes a low-key but highly effective remedy for stomach spasms, allergies, and excess water retention.
This essential oil can help heal stretch marks, skin blemishes, and scars due to wounds, boils, and rashes. Muscle aches and pains as well as digestive issues are relieved when the oil is diluted in a bath or inhaled during aromatherapy.
A few drops of helichrysum oil and rose hip oil can banish acne and heal wounds with minimal scarring. Some loyal users claim it reduces signs of aging by keeping the skin smooth and wrinkle free.
A few drops of the oil on burns as soon after the incident as possible will speed up the healing process. When impact injuries occur, apply the oil as quickly as possible to reduce swelling and reduce the healing time. Helichrysum oil is the only essential oil that contains di-ketones, which play a major role in scar tissue reduction and skin healing.
Helichrysum essential oil therapeutic properties:
Anti-Spasmodic: Helps in relieving headaches, migraines, asthma, bronchitis and irritable bowels.
Anti-Haematoma: Helps in dissolving blood clots and aids healing of the surrounding tissues.
Anti-Inflammatory: Very effective in treating cuts, burns, infections and rheumatoid arthritis.
Cicatrisant: This property makes your wounds and cuts heal and scars disappear. It is equally effective on spots left on your skin by pox, boils, etc.
Cytophylactic: It encourages recycling of dead cell and production of new cells. This property can be particularly beneficial for skin care, especially when used in rejuvenating facial oils.
Relaxant and Anti-Depressant: Curbs negative emotions and stimulates positive thoughts and actions.
I love that historically Basil has been used to symbolize hatred, yet it is also used as a symbol for love. I wonder if this is where the term love hate relationship comes from? Did you know there are more than 30 distinct and intensely aromatic varieties of basil?
The first recorded mention of basil, in records dated to pre-206 B.C.E, states that it “exists only to drive men insane.” For the Greeks, and later the Romans, basil was associated with hatred.
To grow the most potent plants they believed the seeds needed to be sown with swearing and ranting. (sounds like they were watching me pull weeds in the summertime ha!) However, basil later became a symbol of love in Italy, to the point that Giovanni Boccaccio used it to symbolize the tragic love between Lisabetta and Lorenzo in The Decameron. Sicilian folklore associates it with both love and death, and in Moldavian folklore a young man who accepts basil from a young woman will fall in love with her.
Europe in general is rather conflicted on the subject of basil. Parkinson’s 17th century herbal says it can “procure a cheerful and merry heart” while Culpeper’s links it to poison through the observation of its effects in drawing venom out of wounds and the proclamation that “like draws to like.” He even goes so far as to say that basil can generate scorpions, possibly even inside someone’s skull. This scorpion connection is often linked to the Greek story of the basilisk, which in turn is linked to basil in the name basilicum. In some folklore, basil is said to have been used to ward off both the look and bite of this king of serpents.
Perhaps reflecting the plant’s conflicted history, the Victorian language of flowers has two meaning for basil: common basil signifies hatred and sweet basil conveys the sender’s best wishes.
To the ancient Romans, it was a symbol of hatred, yet basil eventually became a token of love in Italy. Young maidens would wear a sprig of basil in their hair to profess their availibility. In some regions of Italy, basil is known as “kiss-me-Nicholas.” One can only wonder if the conflicting symbolism of basil in Rome is the origin of a love-hate relationship?
The royal herb is regarded in a similar manner in Romania where if a boy accepts a sprig of basil from a girl, it means they are engaged to be married.
In Greece today, basil is readily grown as an ornamental and is used in certain religious rituals as a symbol of fertility..
It’s one of my favorite herbs! I love the flavor and the fragrance so much so that we offer a candle and perfume in our Blackberry Basil fragrance. What does it smell like? I’m so glad you asked…
It is a delicious mix of rich sweetness! Sun kissed Blackberries entwined with green leaves, white musk and the unexpected herbal zing of basil. The rich, winey Blackberry takes predominance over the edible leaves and lightly anise-scented basil. It is a fresh, fruity, wild and sensual scent, blending fresh sweetness with a dry herbal accord.
I don’t know about you, but I am SO over this heat and ready for fall! One of my favorite things about Autumn is fragrance.
But are there any alternatives available if you don’t like or can’t use synthetic scents?
I originally searched out nature based scents for my Candles because I know many people (like my daughter Bella) are allergic to some synthetic fragrances. (We offer naturally fragranced candle choices if you have the same sensitivities).
But did you know you can simmer things to make your house smell divine and all the ingredients you need may be in your kitchen right now? It’s fun, and the list is as only limited by your imagination!
Here is our current favorite: a pot of water simmering, 2-3 lemons, a handful of rosemary from the garden and 2 capfuls (sometimes more if Bella has anything to say about it) of vanilla extract.
There are many ways to release the fragrance. You can simmer it in a saucepan like I did (just be sure to keep an eye on the water level so it does not run dry and burn…that does NOT smell good). You can also pour all the ingredients into a crock pot to slowly simmer all day adding water as needed.

Our new Fall fragranceFlambeaux™ is inspired by the Vieux Carré (old French Quarter) lit up with heavy blazing torches for the Mardi Gras carnival. Flambeaux Carriers originally served as a beacon for parade-goers to better enjoy the spectacle of night festivities. The Flambeaux Carriers were originally slaves and free men of color parading, twirling and fooling around in robes. Initially, the Flambeaux were established by the old-line Carnival organization Comus, which sought to make “new people and customs the salvation of Mardi Gras.” The sight of African-Americans lighting the way of the elaborate floats was unforgettable.
Crowds tossed coins to slaves and free men of color trying to earn money for their task of lighting the way for the floats – a custom that continues today. Now, incorporated in modern processionals, the Torchbearers are not only a historic footnote, but serve as a world-class example of performance art. The torches may be lighter and use butane or kerosene, but the entertaining exchange between the crowd and the Flambeaux is a rich Carnival tradition.

Did you know that a fragrance company, Takasago showed the results of a study relating the reduction of clerical error to the use of essential oils. Keyboard punching errors fell by 20 percent when the air was scented with lavender
and 33 percent when jasmine then was substituted.
There was an astonishing 54 percent reduction in clerical error when workers were exposed to lemon oils.
And by intermittently changing aromas, efficiency levels were maintained.
Candlemas is a celebration of light, the day of candles!
In many cultures today February 2nd is celebrated as Candlemas, this day represents when Mary presented Jesus to God in the temple, 40 days after Christmas. Candlemas occurs at a period between the December solstice and the March equinox, so many people traditionally marked that time of the year as winter’s “halfway point” while waiting for the spring.
Many Christians believe that Jesus’ mother Mary presented him to God at the Temple in Jerusalem after observing the traditional 40-day period of purification (of mothers) following his birth. According to a New Testament gospel, a Jewish man named Simeon held the baby in his arms and said that he would be a light for the Gentiles (Luke 2:32). It is for this reason that this event is called Candlemas.
Candles for the coming year are taken to churches to be blessed and burned in homes to celebrate the return of Light.
Snowdrops (galanthas nivalis) are known as Candlemas Bells because they often bloom early in the year, even before Candlemas. Some varieties bloom all winter (in the northern hemisphere). The superstitious used to believe that these flowers should not be brought into the house prior to Candlemas. However, it is also believed in more recent times that these flowers purify a home.
According to folklore, an angel helped these Candlemas bells to bloom and pointed them as a sign of hope to Eve, who wept in repentance and in despair over the cold and death that entered the world. Many Christians see the flower as a symbol of Jesus Christ being this hope for the world. Candles that are lit during Candlemas also symbolize Jesus as the “light of the world”.
Imbolic- making way for the beginning of spring. Imbolc is associated with divination, being perceived as a time when the veils between worlds are thinner. One of the more common winter/spring divination rituals is Ground Hog Day. On February 2nd, it is said that a ground hog that comes out of his burrow and sees his shadow foretells six more weeks of winter weather. No shadow on this day and spring is right around the corner. Most Americans are only familiar with the media glare cast on “Punxsutawney Phil” and a small Pennsylvania town each year, not realizing the more complex European roots of this rite. This practice came with German settlers, the Pennsylvania Dutch, who adapted their own hedgehog observations to a close American native.
Candlemas can remind us that we too have that light within us…
Well the new year is a great time for a new start. Many people are dieting, for me that really never seems to work, here is a little about what I am doing.
I think that many of the diet programs out there make a lot of promises without delivering on them. I really think that the changes we want will come through educating ourselves and hard work, pretty much like everything else in life. Diets only work for so long, and when you get off the program results fail because our habits really never changed.
I liked what Dr. Weil has to say about dieting here.
Did you know that according to Christopher Adams a molecular biologist “Eighty percent of what you perceive as taste is actually smell”.
Dr. Alan Hirsch actually provided his patients with a fragrant inhaler of peppermint to use prior to eating and discovered his patients lost an average of 5 pounds per month with no other behavioral changes than just adding the inhaler. Topping the list of weight reducing fragrances are Peppermint and Green Apple.
We are making Candles this week in both fragrances as well as to-go car and skin scents. Check our Facebook page for availability later this week. <3 Check them out and give it a try yourself. If nothing else, you will enjoy the clean fresh fragrances!
Early Tuesday morning stargazers all over North America and Europe will storms willing be able to witness a spectacular sight! A total lunar eclipse that will also coincide with the Winter Solstice. The Sun, Earth and Moon will be in a direct line -the moon should still be visible,
but will possibly turn pink or even red. Most of this refracted light is in the red part of the spectrum and as a result the moon, seen from Earth, turns a reddish, coppery or orange hue, sometimes even brownish.
“The entire event is visible from North America, Greenland and Iceland,” says NASA’s veteran eclipse expert Fred Espenak, pointing out that for observers in the western United States and Canada, the show will start on Monday evening rather than Tuesday morning.
“Western Europe will see the beginning stages of the eclipse before moonset, while western Asia will get the later stages after moonrise.”
The eclipse runs for three and a half hours, from 6:33 GMT to 10:01 GMT (1:33 a.m. EST to 5:01 a.m. EST), although the stage of total eclipse — when the moon heads into the “umbra” cast by the Earth — lasts from 7:41 to 8:53 GMT (2:41 a.m. EST to 3:53 a.m. EST).
Lunar eclipses have long been associated with superstitions and signs of ill omen, especially in battle. The defeat of the Persian king Darius III by Alexander the Great in the Battle of Gaugamela in 331 B.C. was foretold when the moon turned blood-red a few days earlier.
The last total lunar eclipse took place on Feb. 21, 2008. Next year, says Espenak, will see two: on June 15 and Dec. 10. This Solstice Eclipse is the first in 456 years!
What will you do to celebrate? I am using up some wishes hoping the clouds and rain clear-our area in Southern California is currently hit by what meteorologists are calling the storm of the century. I am going to settle in with a tall glass of wine, light a few candles and hope for the best!
Our Candle fragrance of the day is of course our Winter Solstice: an exquisite blend of Woods, Frozen Blackberry, Fig, Rose, Amber and Spices. Opening with Bergamot and Fig, it reveals a luscious heart of French Rose, Cinnamon, Frozen Blackberry. Base notes of most seductive Cedar, Balsam and Sandalwood are sweetened with Amber.
St. Lucia, the patron Saint of Light. December 13th…In traditional celebrations Saint Lucy comes as a young woman with lights and sweets. A procession is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles (or lights), while others in the procession hold only a single candle each.
One of the most popular Christmas traditions in Sweden is the celebration of Saint Lucia’s Day, on December 13th. Although not a legal holiday, Saint Lucia’s Day is a day of great celebrating and merriment.
The Story of Saint Lucia stretches back to the time of the Vikings and the Roman Empire. According to legend, Lucia was a brave young woman from the island of Sicily, in the Mediterranean. When Lucia heard about the persecution of Christians by the Emperor, she gave one Christian family her entire dowry. This so angered her betrothed husband, that he told authorities that Lucia secretly practiced Christianity. Lucia, who died a martyrs death, was much admired for her courage, generosity and faith. And tradition has it that she took food to Christians hiding from persecution in underground tunnels, wearing candles on a wreath around her head to light the way.
Traditionally, on St. Lucia day The Lucia is dressed in white robes and red ribbons and wears a crown of candles on her head. Often times the eldest daughter plays Lucia, and greets her family with a breakfast of hot coffee and pastries, known as Lucia Buns or St Lucia buns or Swedish Saffron Buns or Swedish Lussekatt.
St. Lucia is rich with religious history and symbolism, and it is a holiday that has withstood commercialism and stayed firm in its origins in modern times.
We are celebrating this day by pouring our Ginger Crumbcake Candles! A tantalizing blend of the rich, spicy scents of gingerbread baked with saffron, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses, vanilla, brown sugar and butter notes.

Last night was dad’s memorial celebration. We had ahouse fullof friends and family (thank you to all who showed up or sent kind thoughts) and we felt very blessed.
During our celebration I had the opportunity to meet a life long friend of my father in law’s. Dad was an electrical contractor and he met his friend when hired to work for him years ago. They continued their friendship and working relationship for many years-he even transferred work along to Scott after dad retired.
During the evening wereleased butterflies, lit candles, had many great toasts and remembered good times with dad. During one of those moments of sharing dad’s friend Terry was very emotional, there was not a dry eye in the place. It struck me that we should all be so lucky as to have a friend that misses us so much when we are gone that they are moved to tears. I agree with Terry…dad left this world a better place for having been in it.
Bella and Dominik releasing their butterfly...
I am taking this lesson away from that experience: I want to be the type of girl worthy of such a friend.
People have such different takes on Candlelight. For me it makes everything better. If I lived alone I would probably never use electric lighting at all…
If clothing makes the man, Fragrance makes the woman!
With all the fragrances for bath and body and candles on the market, how do you find yourSignature Scent? What do the different fragrance families say about your personality?
Here is a breakdown of the major fragrance families:
Men: Fresh: Citrus, Green leaves, Marine notes Aromatic: Citrus, Lavendar, Geranium Woody: Vetiver, Agarwood, Cedar
Floral fragrances (the most popular) are feminine and romantic, while Oriental fragrances are rich, warm, spicy and sophisticated. The Oriental family also includes Gourmand- a relatively new category, with the concept of basing fragrances on edible notes. A gourmand scent may contain notes such as spices, honey, vanilla, chocolate, amber and cinnamon. Gourmand scents are usually “comfy” and delicious and wear nicely in the cooler seasons.
Woody includes nutty and spicy with resinous notes of amber, sandalwood, cedar wood, and a touch of patchouli.
Some wood blends have a hint of cinnamon, a sprinkle of earth, or a puff of tobacco.
Stay turned for perfume specials in each of these families!

Here are some things you can do to reduce stress:

Work out! Exercise is great with helping us manage our stress. This is my on again love affair…reboot yourself and get out and walk! I promise you will feel better!
Ask for help! When you need help and someone asks if you do-take them up on it! They will be glad they helped you and you will get a bit of relief.
