My kind of exhibit!

NY Museum Stages First ‘Scent’ Exhibit

Chandler Burr calls his works ‘olfactory art,’ and says he’s not a freak—he just uses his nose more often and more carefully than the rest of us. Blake Gopnik reports.

What a fantastic idea! The very thought stirs my scent loving soul… I wish I was closer so I could attend. Although if I were making real wishes I would wish to share a bottle of red wine with Chandler Burr and talk scent for an afternoon.

I personally disagree with his idea that “a thing must be artificial; it is impossible to create art entirely with nature”—but I understand the point he is making.

The Blue Hour: The blue hour comes from the French expression l’heure bleue, which refers to the period of twilight each morning and evening where there is neither full daylight nor complete darkness. The time is considered special because of the quality of the light at this time of day. Soft Sweet Pea, Blackcurrant for contrast and Bilberries for charm, the deep warmth of Rosewood, gentle Almondwood, richest Sandalwood and French cedar. Transformational.

Full Moon: Almost impossible to describe, this strong and complex fragrance oil has notes of resins, patchouli, vetiver, myrrh, herbs, woods grasses and anise. It has a smoky depth accented with a fresh and herbal top-note, and has unisex appeal. Perfect for dancing in the light of a full moon.

Celtic MoonSpice: A wonderfully fragrant blend of warm spices, cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. This reminds me of being snuggled inside a cabin in front of a cozy fireplace on a cold crisp fall night.

What is a Blue Moon anyway?

“O, swear not by the moon, th’ inconstant moon, That monthly changes in her circled orb…” -Juliet, Romeo and Juliet, 2:2:115

The night walked down the sky with the moon in her hand.  ~Frederick L. Knowles

There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.  ~George Carlin, Brain Droppings, 1997

Moonlight is sculpture.  ~Nathaniel Hawthorne

There is something haunting in the light of the moon; it has all the dispassionateness of a disembodied soul, and something of its inconceivable mystery.  ~Joseph Conrad

Look how the pale queen of the silent night
Doth cause the ocean to attend upon her….
~Charles Best, “A Sonnet of the Moon”

How like a queen comes forth the lonely Moon
From the slow opening curtains of the clouds
Walking in beauty to her midnight throne!
~George Croly, Diana

Give me my Romeo; and, when I shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.
~William Shakespeare

“The hours I spend with you I look upon as sort of a perfumed garden, a dim twilight, and a fountain singing to it. You and you alone make me feel that I am alive. Other men it is said have seen angels, but I have seen thee and thou art enough.”
― George Edward Moore

The process of Creativity.

Do you dream in color?  Have you ever dreamed with fragrance?  Sometimes I do…

This fragrance has haunted me since the first time I smelled it in a dream…this is the closest perfume reproduction I can make.  It is not exact, but very close. I love this one so much I felt she deserved her own blog entry…

I wanted to share a little bit of my insane process of creating with you in hopes that you will love, or at least better understand the end result.

I keep little blotter papers near me so I can scratch out ideas and inspirations as they strike-I have been known to pull over when driving to record ideas, jolt upright out of sleep to scratch them down,  and sometimes they just quietly sneak up and tap me on the shoulder.  Either way I hope this helps you understand the crazy that creates my fragrances….

Bella Notte Fragrance note scribbles

A few weeks ago during a rainstorm I woke up at 2 am in the middle of a haunting dream about a girl with a velvet dress (I think I am going to write a book about her someday) reading an old leather book, cemeteries, angels, roses, mist, leather,  and I could literally smell her perfume.

I decided to re-create her Perfume and I have decided to call it Bella Notte (Italian for Beautiful Night)

Bella Notte Perfume: Rich Dark & Warm, Intense, Sensual and Feminine…it begins like a dream with wistful  Rose Absolute & Grey Amber, mid notes of Smokey Cedar  grounded with Dark Sweet Benzoin & Vanilla, hints of Wild Lavender, ancient Woods and Earth, infused with burnt Caramel Bitters.

Inspired by old roses on a lovers grave, tattered time worn velvet, lost love, longing and heartbreak, misty full moons, wild gardens and herbs growing irreverently, remembrance of things past…

Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think….❥

Spice for your Spirit…

Spice for your Spirit…

Houses of worship have used Frankincense for centuries for it’s heavenly aroma…it is not suprising to discover new research has proven the scent can indeed raise your spirits.  Scientists at John Hopkins University in Maryland and Hebrew University in Jerusalem found that incensole acetate, a compound found in frankincense resin, simulates production of a protien called TRPV3, which elevates your mood affecting areas of the brain that respond to anxiety and depression drugs.

“Burning the resin produces the strongest mood-elevating results, as the effects of inhaling the smoke are immediate,” says Ruth Knill, PhD, a licensed acupunturist.

If incense isn’t for you, light a frankinsence infused candle, add 10 drops of essential oil to a bath, or dab a few drops (diluted with a carrier oil-like sweet almond oil-onto your wrist.

Scents & Scent-abilities…

Scents & Scent-abilities…

Have you ever noticed after smelling a favorite perfume or candle for awhile that you cannot smell it as strongly or sometimes at all?!

Our sense of smell is sensitive to new scents, but gradually loses that sensitivity over time. The best way to prevent this is to change the fragrance frequently. After a few days, you can go back to the fragrance you had become used to. But remember, your fragrance will always smell fresh to others because they are only exposed to it infrequently…Fragrance is a powerful yet sneaky stimulator.  There are even companies now that sell their fragrances to stores as “ambiance” to keep you shopping longer or purchasing more.

For instance…Go to any pet store and what do you notice when you first walk in? The smell. Most pet stores smell awful, and that affects the amount of time we spend in the store. It also renders our visit a little less enjoyable, because we sub-consciously want to leave. It also renders our visit a little less enjoyable, because we subconsciously want to leave due to the foul odor.
Another easy example: Try going to a bakery and not buy anything. The odor of fresh baked bread and muffins strikes us right away! We look at everything and tend to stay longer, simply because of the smell!

Try this one: A large Canadian retail chain of bookstores chose to have a coffee shop near the entrance of the stores. The delightful smell of freshly brewed coffee goes a long way to enhance the customer experience while purchasing books.
And who can resist the unmistakable smell of fresh buttered popcorn?

Enough said.  Odors bring back memories and influence our behavior. Depending on the fragrance, odors can calm, relax, stimulate associations, evoke, frighten and arouse us. In fact, we have the capacity to distinguish up to 10,000 different odors that influence our memory and feelings and impact our quality of life. The sense of smell is very powerful and primitive; it affects us in subtle ways on a daily basis.
