Nook vs. Kindle vs. Novel Which e-book reader should you buy?

Hello…My name is Lisa and I am a Bookworm…

I love to read, and have wondered about ereaders-which is best?  The Barnes and Noble Nook? The Amazon Kindle? Or Pandigital’s Novel?

I know every book of mine by its smell, and I have but to put my nose between the pages to be reminded of all sorts of things.  ~George Robert Gissing

I never thought an electronic E-Book Reader would work for me.  I am a book addict, I collect books and just the musty dusty book smell in my favorite vintage bookshop can make my heart skip a beat.  I thought I would look into ereaders and see what they were all about.  I went to try out Barnes and Noble’s Nook for myself and read review after review at C Net.

There are so many pros and cons out there that it really boils down to what you are trying to do with your reader and which features work best for you.

I chose Pandigital’s Novel and I will tell you why.  I love to read at night-and you can change the text from day reading to Night read-which flips the background to black and leaves text white so you need no additional lighting to read.  You can change the font or brightness to suit you. It may not work as well on a sunny beach as say the Nook (but it has not stopped me). It comes loaded with a great dictionary-tap the word in question and Novel’s dictionary pops up and  will define it.

I am graphics oriented and love that the touch screen is Full Color-so magazines and pictures are full color.  It holds your music and photos, video-whatever you want.  A main selling point to me is that it compatible with Barnes and Noble stores so you can download books in under a second.  The Novel is Wi-Fi ready!  You can surf the internet or email on the virtual keyboard.  You can also lend and borrow books via lendme technology. It has expandable memory and can literally hold thousands of books!

I love my Novel and can not imagine life without it now.  I have not experienced any problems with it being too slow-it has *so far* run great!  I do not see it ever replacing my beloved vintage books or collected favorites *but* it is unbeaten in quickly providing “snack books” and it even has the ability to download Free books from B & N!

The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it.  ~James Bryce

A good book should leave you… slightly exhausted at the end.  You live several lives while reading it.  ~William Styron, interview, Writers at Work, 1958

Books are portable Magick…

Go lose yourself in a great book!

*Update* STILL in love with the Novel. It has performed great-I have now read over 30 books using it and love it more than when I got it. I have borrowed 3 books and that feature also works great, *and you can easily use Facebook as well. 🙂

*further update* Absolutely LOVE the Novel. I have had zero problems and have used it every night(read over 60 books and magazines and counting)! By far my favorite feature is the Night Reading setting. But full color doesn’t hurt either!

people complain about the pandigital novel so often that many think its not worth the hassle of buying. But mine, I’ve had no problems what-so-ever. I ABSOLUTELY love it. It does exactly what i need and is definitely in my price range.

I completely agree John! Still in love with mine and I use it everyday. 🙂 Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Lisa, I loved your entry and I’m planning to get a e-Reader for my wife. I think she has the same thought process as you and I think she’ll like it. I’ll share your thoughts with her, thanks for continually keeping this updated so we could see how the Pandigital has done in the long haul!

I received a pandigital for Christmas and was sooooo excited. I soon discovered, however, that the touch screan was way too slow. I would turn a page, and have to wait anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes, seriously, for the page to turn. Many times, it just would not respond. I have since learned that they were actually recalled because of this problem, and that the ones on the shelves now are actually an updated version in which this problem has been corrected. I absolutely love the idea of the pandigital, and just the very limited use that I was able to get out of mine has convinced me that this is exactly the e-reader that I want. Though I have had problems with it, I will be returning the one that I received for Christmas, and purchasing one of the newer ones. It does seem to be a great product, and I cannot wait to get one that does work.

    Hi Amy,
I am sure you will like it. 🙂 Mine never had that problem, but it did have a pretty extensive software update-and is still running like a champ! I use it at least twice a day, for reading and on facebook/twitter social networking stuff. Let us know if your new one is any better. I am hoping so.

i just purchased a pandigital novel, and i have a few questions. 1. will it read the books to you as you follow along. 2. do you create an account with barnes and noble?

  • bluemooncandles

    Hello Nakima,
As far as I know the Pandigital Novel will not read books to you -but you may want to check out ( )I know that works on ipods so it may work on the Novel.

Yes, the easiest way to download and share books is through a Barnes and Noble account.

Good Luck, I hope you love yours as much as I love mine.

Thanks this has helped me a lot I was having a hard time deciding between the three. I was thinking kindle because it has longer batter life, no glare, but I don’t like that you can’t replace the battery, browser is experimental. I like that pandigital always you to use a sd card for more storage, music, calender, etc… I believe you just helped me decide.

I’m glad Sherry. I STILL am in love with mine! 🙂

    Hi Farah,
Yes, Keep me posted. I too want an ipad, but for a reader so far I am really happy with my Novel. It is still going strong and without a single glitch and I am blowing through 3-5 books a week.
    Happy 4th!

I got my book over a year ago and still read it daily. I don’t play games or surf the web, I just want to read. I have 30 books so far and never a problem.
