What inspired our fall fragrance Flambeaux™?

Our new Fall fragrance Flambeaux™  is inspired by the Vieux Carré (old French Quarter) lit up with heavy blazing torches for the Mardi Gras carnival.  Flambeaux Carriers originally served as a beacon for parade-goers to better enjoy the spectacle of night festivities. The Flambeaux Carriers were originally slaves and free men of color parading, twirling and fooling around in robes. Initially, the Flambeaux were established by the old-line Carnival organization Comus, which sought to make “new people and customs the salvation of Mardi Gras.” The sight of African-Americans lighting the way of the elaborate floats was unforgettable.

Crowds tossed coins to slaves and free men of color trying to earn money for their task of lighting the way for the floats – a custom that continues today. Now, incorporated in modern processionals, the Torchbearers are not only a historic footnote, but serve as a world-class example of performance art. The torches may be lighter and use butane or kerosene, but the entertaining exchange between the crowd and the Flambeaux is a rich Carnival tradition.

What does it smell like you ask???  Flambeaux ™ (A Blue Moon Candle’s Exclusive!) : Exotic woods and cajun spices, with a promise of sweet sensuality and erotic mysticism, grounded in strength with just a hint of fresh green notes for balance. It is at once stimulating and relaxing; hypnotic and grounding; a delightful and heady experience for both men and women. Cedar, Tonka Bean, Benzoin, Vetiver and Black Pepper. Middle notes include Vanilla Absolute, Myrrh and Sweetgrass, and topped with Turkish Rose, Italian Bergamot, and a hint of Cardamom and Nutmeg.

The process of Creativity.

Do you dream in color?  Have you ever dreamed with fragrance?  Sometimes I do…

This fragrance has haunted me since the first time I smelled it in a dream…this is the closest perfume reproduction I can make.  It is not exact, but very close. I love this one so much I felt she deserved her own blog entry…

I wanted to share a little bit of my insane process of creating with you in hopes that you will love, or at least better understand the end result.

I keep little blotter papers near me so I can scratch out ideas and inspirations as they strike-I have been known to pull over when driving to record ideas, jolt upright out of sleep to scratch them down,  and sometimes they just quietly sneak up and tap me on the shoulder.  Either way I hope this helps you understand the crazy that creates my fragrances….

Bella Notte Fragrance note scribbles

A few weeks ago during a rainstorm I woke up at 2 am in the middle of a haunting dream about a girl with a velvet dress (I think I am going to write a book about her someday) reading an old leather book, cemeteries, angels, roses, mist, leather,  and I could literally smell her perfume.

I decided to re-create her Perfume and I have decided to call it Bella Notte (Italian for Beautiful Night)

Bella Notte Perfume: Rich Dark & Warm, Intense, Sensual and Feminine…it begins like a dream with wistful  Rose Absolute & Grey Amber, mid notes of Smokey Cedar  grounded with Dark Sweet Benzoin & Vanilla, hints of Wild Lavender, ancient Woods and Earth, infused with burnt Caramel Bitters.

Inspired by old roses on a lovers grave, tattered time worn velvet, lost love, longing and heartbreak, misty full moons, wild gardens and herbs growing irreverently, remembrance of things past…

Please leave me a comment and let me know what you think….❥

What Scent makes you feel alive?

Did you know that a fragrance company, Takasago showed the results of a study relating the reduction of clerical error to the use of essential oils.  Keyboard punching errors fell by 20 percent when the air was scented with lavender

and 33 percent when jasmine then was substituted.

There was an astonishing 54 percent reduction in clerical error when workers were exposed to lemon oils.

And by intermittently changing aromas, efficiency levels were maintained.

What wakes you up and makes you feel Alive?!

The origin of Candles on St. Lucia’s Day.

St. Lucia, the patron Saint of Light.  December 13th…In traditional celebrations Saint Lucy comes as a young woman with lights and sweets.  A procession is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles (or lights), while others in the procession hold only a single candle each.

One of the most popular Christmas traditions in Sweden is the celebration of Saint Lucia’s Day, on December 13th. Although not a legal holiday, Saint Lucia’s Day is a day of great celebrating and merriment.

The Story of Saint Lucia stretches back to the time of the Vikings and the Roman Empire. According to legend, Lucia was a brave young woman from the island of Sicily, in the Mediterranean. When Lucia heard about the persecution of Christians by the Emperor, she gave one Christian family her entire dowry. This so angered her betrothed husband, that he told authorities that Lucia secretly practiced Christianity. Lucia, who died a martyrs death, was much admired for her courage, generosity and faith. And tradition has it that she took food to Christians hiding from persecution in underground tunnels, wearing candles on a wreath around her head to light the way.

Traditionally, on St. Lucia day The Lucia is dressed in white robes and red ribbons and wears a crown of candles on her head. Often times the eldest daughter plays Lucia, and greets her family with a breakfast of hot coffee and pastries, known as Lucia Buns or St Lucia buns or Swedish Saffron Buns or Swedish Lussekatt.

St. Lucia is rich with religious history and symbolism, and it is a holiday that has withstood commercialism and stayed firm in its origins in modern times.

We are celebrating this day by pouring our Ginger Crumbcake Candles!  A tantalizing blend of the rich, spicy scents of gingerbread baked with saffron, nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses, vanilla, brown sugar and butter notes.
