Proud mom of a Mermaid! <3

I don’t share a lot of mushy stuff here, but I *just have* to share this- I am really proud of my daughter Bella.
She is 11, and even though just a kid, she is willing to work hard for what she wants out of life!

bellas shellsShe has taken the entrepreneurial spirit to heart and makes her own products (Mermaid inspired headbands and barrettes) and sells them on her website and ETSY store.   She also has a Facebook page- Please stop by and say hello, she would love your support!  I love to see kids work hard for what they want and place value on their dreams.

Thank you!!!

The BIG tooth!

Did you know that the Megalodon was the biggest prehistoric shark that ever lived?!  It was the biggest predatory marine creature in the history of the planet.

Megalodon Jaws Museum of Natural History

The Megalodon shark earned its name “giant tooth” for their monstrously large choppers!  Over half a foot long, serrated, and heart-shaped (by comparison, the biggest teeth of a Great White Shark are only about three inches long).

Sharks are constantly shedding their teeth over the course of a lifetime–Megalodon teeth have been found all over the world, from antiquity to modern times.

In 2008, a joint research team from Australia and the U.S. used computer simulations to calculate Megalodon’s biting power. The results can only be described as terrifying: whereas a modern Great White Shark chomps with about 1.8 tons of force, Megalodon chomped down on its prey with a force of between 10.8 and 18.2 tons–enough to crush the skull of a prehistoric whale as easily as a grape.

Megalodon’s size has been a matter of debate. Over the past century, paleontologists have come up with estimates ranging from 40 to 100 feet, but the consensus today is that adults were 55 to 60 feet long and weighed as much as 100 tons!

Shark fossils are extremely rare because sharks have no bones, only cartilage, which does not fossilize well. Their teeth, however, are very hard. Their teeth are made of a bone-like material coated with hard enamel and they fossilize very well. Megalodon teeth are similar to those of the Great White Shark, but are much bigger, thicker, and with finer serrations.

Scott & Bella were sent this Megalodon tooth from their friend Teresa Shaw at Aquatic Pleasures Dive Center in North Carolina.  It was discovered during their dive at Meg Ledge off the coast in Wilmington North Carolina about 24-40 miles off shore in 100-110 foot deep water.  The day of the dive Aquatic Pleasures Dive Center recovered hundreds.  You can contact them direct at their website www.DiveNowWorkLater.com to purchase one, or better yet-Dive with them to find one yourself!  They have another dive scheduled June 16th and 17th-book your spot TODAY and create your own adventure!

For every inch of tooth (tip at gum line point to tip of end of tooth) is approximately 10-12 ft of shark. This tooth is about 5 inches so this came from a massive shark.

It is awe inspiring to me that you can hold a bit of pre historic history in your hand.  Part of a savage beast that lurked in the deep and terrorized the seas all those years ago, the perfect gift for any Sea lover.

The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea.  ~Isak Dinesen

Doing the Right thing…

Although this post has nothing to do with Candles, it touched my soul and reminds me of the extremes some people will go to, to do the Right thing.  I thought I would share it in the hopes that it would stir your soul as well.

Let us never forget! The world hasn’t just become wicked…it’s always been wicked.. The prize doesn’t always go to the most deserving.

Irena Sendler

12 May 2008 (aged 98)
Warsaw, Poland

During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.. She had an ‘ulterior motive’.
She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews (being German).  Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and she carried in the back of her truck a burlap sack, (for larger
kids)…She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.

She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat her
severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.  After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it and reunited the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes or adopted.

In 2007 Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected.
Al Gore won — for a slide show on Global Warming.
Later another politician, Barack Hussein Obama, won for his work as a community organizer for ACORN.
Now, more than ever, with Iran , and others, claiming the HOLOCAUST to be ‘a myth’.  It’s imperative to make sure the world never forgets, because there are others who would like to do it again.  Remember….

Would you take a stand at your own risk if the need arose?  Words for thought…

A great example of a positive outlook and facing in the direction you want to move.

I read something this morning that grabbed my attention.  Did you know that Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy believed so certainly in his teams victory that he had all of his players fitted for their championship rings on Saturday night?!  A bold move that will surely go down in Superbowl legend.

It made me realize we should all have that kind of belief in things we undertake.

It’s easy to have faith in yourself when you’re a winner, when
you’re number one.  What you’ve got to have is faith in
yourself when you’re not a winner.

Get off your rich ass and help somebody

My friend and mentor Donna Maria shared this video, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you. The title contains the first (and probably last) piece of profanity I have ever used at this blog. I assure you, it’s justified. Watch this video, by Ron and Tasra Dawson, and you’ll see what I mean.

I agree with dM, “If you are among my regular blog readers, and you watched this video, and can now think of a single thing to complain about, then shame on you. And shame on me too, if I start feeling sorry for myself.”

While not every assumption applies to us all, the general premise does! A grateful heart coupled with hands that help is a VERY powerful combo indeed!

Follow Donna Maria on twitter and read her blog here.   Learn more about Ron at his Twitter page and his blog, and also at their Teen Identity Project.

Now get off your rich ass and go help somebody …

What will you do to make a difference for someone else???

Gothic Hollywood Glamour

To me Maila Nurmi is an icon-one of the world’s most beautiful women.

In the early 1950s, Malia was close friends with James Dean, and they hung out together at Googie’s coffee shop on the corner of Crescent Heights and Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Her explanation for their friendship: “We have the same neuroses.”

Malia knew Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and briefly dated both Marlon Brando and Orson Welles.

She was the Original Elvira.  Nurmi made television history as the first horror movie hostess.

Nurmi was featured in Life Magazine June 14, 1954

Nurmi was an Indie Business owner and opened “Vampira’s Attic”, an antiques store in her home on Melrose Avenue. She also sold handmade jewelry and clothing. She made items for several celebrities including Grace Slick of the music group Jefferson Airplane and the Zappa family.

She was ahead of her time, an innovator, icon, inspiration and cult classic glamor girl.

I have her picture on the wall in my Candle Shop, inspiring me every day as we create our Gothic Candles and Bathworks! ♥

Gratitude is the heart’s memory.

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

Passion and Poetry…

I like to think I live my life as vibrantly as I can, I want to experience everything, feel everything, soak up every moment.  This poem moved me, so I thought I would share it with you…

The things I love with a passion.

I rock and roll with passion
I talk out my soul with a passion

I eat good food with passion
I defeat bad mood with a passion

I sleep well with passion
I weep hell with a passion

I dream endlessly with passion
I gleam ceaselessly with a passion

I aim for money with passion
I do the same for honey with a passion

I listen carefully with passion
I glisten dutifully with a passion

I search for fame with passion
I research to blame with a passion

I walk everyday with passion
I talk and play with a passion

I embrace life with passion
I face nightlife with a passion

I laugh out with passion
I chaffe about with a passion

I cook with others with passion
I look at mothers with a passion

I touch gently with passion
I clutch tightly with a passion

I work hard with a passion
I rock mad with a passion

I gear up goals with passion
I stir up roles with a passion

I make friends with passion
I take weekends with a passion

I love kissing with passion
I love teasing with a passion

I make love with passion
I take from above with a passion

If push comes to shove
Label me old fashioned
For these are things I caption
In life with all my passion

Sweet Dreams Essential Oil linen spray~

Many members of my family are sensitive to the fragrance in commercial laundry softeners and dryer sheets.  Here is a great alternative that I use.

This is a recipe I use for linen spray to add natural beneficial fragrance to our sheets and towels.  (I also have first hand knowledge that it makes a fantastic Monster Banishing Spray for little ones to spray under the bed before sleep).

  • 4 oz. clean spray bottle with a fine mist setting (do not use a bottle that previously contained cleaning products or hair products such as hair spray).
  • 30-40 drops of your favorite calming/relaxing or sensual essential oil or essential oil blend keeping the safety data of the chosen essential oil(s) in mind.
  • 1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of high-proof alcohol (vodka is suitable, rubbing alcohol is not) or 3 ounces of distilled water.

This is my favorite blend:

  • 15 drops Sandalwood- relaxing, soothing, cooling, and sensual. It promotes restful sleep and helps to ease an anxious mind. It’s considered an aid in meditation and prayer- It is grounding in times of emotional distraction and aids with peace and acceptance in times of loss. In vapor therapy, Sandalwood Oil can be used to help clear bronchitis, coughs, chest infections, asthma, insomnia and irritability.
  • 15 drops Grapefruit or Bergamot-(I love the Bergamot)- used in the treatment of depression, stress, tension, fear, hysteria, infection (all types including skin), anorexia, psoriasis, eczema and general convalescence.
  • 2 drops Rose- an exotic aphrodisiac, an emollient in skin care products, and a balancer of the spirit.
  • 2 drops Jasmine- a sensual, soothing, calming oil that promotes love and peace.

Be sure and take heed in the safety data for the oil(s) you choose to use.

Directions: Fill the spray bottle with your choice of either 1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of alcohol or 3 ounces of distilled water. (Even though a 4 oz. bottle is suggested, leave about 1 oz. unfilled so you can shake the bottle well between uses.)

Then, add 30-40 drops of essential oil. Essential oils can very in strength. You may want to try 20 drops at first especially if you or your partner are sensitive to strong aromas. Shake the bottle prior to each use, and let it sit for about a day before making a conclusion that the aroma is too weak; the aroma can change after the linen spray has had time to sit. Mist your sheets lightly. Be especially careful not to allow the mist to fall onto your skin, furniture or into open beverages. Be careful also to only use lightly colored essential oils otherwise your linen spray could stain your bed linens.

Sweet Dreams! ❤

Undercover Boss = Brilliant!

The new documentary on CBS Undercover Boss is genius!  Can you imagine being a CEO going undercover in your own company to research the way jobs are done, productivity, morale and day to day operations?

While I do not think every boss will react the way tonight’s CEO Larry O’Donnell of Waste Management did, it certainly gives us plenty to ponder.

I could not help but love Larry O’Donnell’s attitude.  He views his employees as valuable, and truly wants to motivate and inspire the people in his company.   Getting an entry level view sure gives you a different perception of your company than you get from reading a report sitting in a corner office.  Overall I loved this show- it really inspired me as well!

If you own your own company what do you think of this tactic?
Would you go undercover?

If you did, would you be willing to implement changes based on the things you found?

What would you want your CEO to see?

Did you watch the program?  What did you think?

An easy step towards conquering Chaos ❥

Welcome to my life. ☺

It is a little crazy here sometimes!

If you are like me you are juggling lots of balls at the same time, which can be challenging at best.

I am the owner/candlemaker for Blue Moon Candles an Indie Business (check out the Indie Beauty Network) making Organic wax Candles, I am a mom that works both in and out of the home, I also manage a Dental office.  On top of that I have many interests and love to do lots of other things!   All of these things add joy and purpose to my life.  They can also conspire to wreak havoc if I am not careful & organized.

Here is a fantastic resource I have found, it is helping me get my life and home in order, so I would like to share it with you.

The site is called The Fly lady.

The description of her site is: that The Fly Lady has a special way of weaving housecleaning tips with homespun humor and daily musings about life. She has a no-nonsense approach to getting your house and your life in order. She mixes housekeeping advice with insights about life and love and anything else that is on her mind.

For me it is a helpful step by step guide on how to stay on track…here is her info on Beginning Baby Steps. I like it that there are limits, so I do not get as easily overwhelmed…you can do anything for 15 minutes right?!  There are some good recipes and lots of other resources for busy people there too.

Check it out and let me know what you think…and I will keep you posted on my progress.  Wish me luck!

Healing properites of Lavender ♛

If you want to learn about Aromatherapy and are interested in starting to collect Essential Oils for your own use, Lavender is where you want to start!  Talk about a hard working multipurpose essential oil, lavender is king! ♛

lavander

Lavender essential oil has soothing, calming, antiseptic and restorative properties.  Lavender is considered the multi purpose oil, is readily used neat, (undiluted) and combines well with almost all other oils for a wide variety of benefits.

Lavender Essential Oil Physical Benefits and Effects…

  • Skin care – especially dry or acne prone skin-I use this on my daughter for her eczema.
  • Natural Antibacterial – Lavender has a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.32% against staphylococcus aureas. (in the presence of 0.32% of the oil this organism cannot grow).  I even add some to the water I mop my floors with.
  • Headaches – rub a drop or two on the temples for tension migraine relief.
  • Burns – The cooling, soothing and skin restorative effects are good for anti-inflammatory sunburn care. Documented use as an emergency care for heatstroke until medical personnel can arrive. I keep a bottle in the kitchen because I *always* burn myself cooking.
  • Insect Repellent/Bites and Stings – Repel bugs and takes the sting away from bites.
  • Blood Pressure and Heart – Soothes heart palpitations and lowers blood pressure because of anti-stress properties
  • Congestion/Asthma – Anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects make lavender good for respiratory support. Suitable for use with children as well.
  • Dandruff – Stimulating and moisturizing effects help with hair shine and dry scalp.

Lavender & your Mood…

  • Antidepressant – Lavender is a well-documented antidepressant essential oil.
  • Refreshing and Uplifting – Can help balance mood swings and PMS symptoms
  • Anti-Stress – Calming and soothing effects help counteract stress hormones
  • Insomnia – A mild sedative effect for restless or anxious nights

Cautions for Using Lavender: There are very few precautions with the use of lavender essential oils.  High quality organic lavender essential oils are best.

We love ours mixed with some Madagascar Vanilla Essential Oil and added to our Organic Coconut wax Candles!

10 Reasons It’s Awesome People Don’t Like You

10 Reasons It’s Awesome People Don’t Like You .

What? 10 Reasons It’s Awesome People DON’T Like You? Yes, you read it right. This is an excerpt of a great blog post I found on Twitter today… it was written by Lori Deschene, of SeeingGood.com which is a pretty neat blog that I am grateful to have found and am going to add to my reader!

You can read the entire posting HERE, but I’ve excerpted the 10 reasons for you to give you good reason to head on over to Lori’s blog and read some more!

This is all SO true and I am feeling a lot of these things right now, as I’ve recently come to terms with the fact that it’s impossible for one person to be everything for everyone. Some people are just going to not like you. And that’s just part of life. The sooner you learn that lesson, the better… because look at what it frees you up to do!

read on ladies…

10. It allows you to be true to yourself. The biggest disservice you can do yourself is shape-shifting to please your audience. It’s exhausting (even to watch) and, more importantly, pointless. No one will get to know who you really are, which will leave you feeling empty.

9. It gives you the power to say no. I truly believe people are good at heart. That being said, it’s human nature to test boundaries; and it happens all the time in relationships. When you’re willing to be disliked, you’re not afraid to say no as it suits you. Both your yeses and nos shape your future, so choose them wisely.

8. You’ll be more comfortable exploring your feelings. I know–this isn’t a popular one for the male persuasion. But doesn’t it feel good to just be where you are without pretending for someone else’s sake? I’m not saying you should act in anger or fear; just that it’s pretty empowering to say, “Hell yeah–I’m terrified” (or lonely or weak or struggling) regardless of what people will think.

7. You can help other people. An angst-filled younger me made a faux voodoo doll for a middle school teacher who forever changed my life (not my proudest moment). It’s often the least popular people who strike the deepest chord in us. Be unpopular when necessary and push people to be their best. You just may save someone’s life.

6. You can freely express your thoughts. I’ve always said one of the kindest things you can do for someone else is to listen without forming an opinion. You deserve that same kindness, but the reality is you won’t always get it. People will form opinions when you speak. Talk anyways. Be kind in your words, but fearless.

5. It prepares you for great success. Pick one of your favorite popular Twitterers, be it a celebrity or social media guru (there are a ton). Go look at their @replies. Odds are they field their fair share of harsh comments. The higher you rise the more negative feedback you’ll receive, both constructive and unnecessary. Being disliked and OK with it prepares you for making it big.

4. It teaches you to offer kindness and compassion without expectations. It’s not too difficult to offer someone compassion when they’ve treated you with respect and kindness. What’s more valuable for your development as a person, and to mankind as whole, is the ability to do what’s right because it’s right–not because you’ll get something in return.

3. You’ll inspire other people. There is someone I know who has the uncanny ability to keep going, even when others try to pull her down. I learn from her every day. Every person who doesn’t love her assertive, over-the-top personality is a reminder she is unique and not afraid.

2. You can use your time wisely. If you’re liked by everyone, odds are you’re spreading yourself way too thin trying to keep them all happy. I disagree with people who say life is too short. Most of us have plenty of time. We just have to use it well, bettering ourselves and the lives of people around us instead of worrying about other people’s perceptions.

1. You can choose to smile anyways. You could use your energy to make daily inventories of everything that’s wrong–the money you don’t have, the esteem you didn’t earn, the people you disappointed. Or you could commit to being your best, and then sit back and smile. Life will always be a balancing act. Learn to teeter in serenity.

Enter Sandman…..

Don’t underestimate the power of sleep.

Did you know not getting enough sleep can impair your immunity causing you to get sick more often, create constant low grade inflammation,  increase your risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and even make you fatter!

Most of us need between 7-9 hours of shut eye a night, with those getting 6 hours or less facing the increased risk of disease.

Here are some tips to hep you fall out faster!

  • Wake up and go to bed at the same time every day, even on weekends.
  • Limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco products during the day, especially in the hours before sleep.
  • Finish eating 2 to 3 hours before bedtime, avoiding big meals.
  • Exercise regularly. Finish your exercise a few hours before bedtime.
  • Eliminate napping or limit the duration to 20 to 30 minutes.

Create the Best Possible Sleep Environment

  • Remove electronics like computers and televisions from your room.
  • Keep the room cool, comfortable, quiet, and dark.
  • Use a comfortable mattress and pillows.
  • Use the bed only for sleep and intimacy.

Prepare for Sleep

  • Establish a relaxing bedtime routine: take a bath, read a book, bask in candlelight and stare peacefully into the flame, listen to relaxing music before bed.
  • Don’t watch the clock—it can cause anxiety about sleep.
  • Get out of bed if you can’t fall asleep within 15 to 20 minutes. Only spend time in bed when you are actually sleeping.
  • Write down concerns that keep you awake, creating a “to do” list for tomorrow. Also keep a sleep journal to help you see patterns in your sleep.

Let  aromatherapy relax you-we love our Lavanilla scented natural wax candles, but really you can use any fragrance you love.

Thinking outside the box… :)

thinkingoutsideofthebox

The healthiest of all human emotions is Gratitude…

In this world of downturns and difficulty it is easy to give in to the negative vibe around us…I think that is even more reason we should hold on to gratefulness.

Gratitude will not only make you healthy and happy, it will also change your perspective in life.  Happy people basically focus on others; unhappy people focus on themselves and wallow in self-pity and doubt.  Grateful people are far more optimistic and see whatever circumstances they’re in as an opportunity for good.

Gratitude sweetens our disposition, brightens our day, and encourages those around us.  Gratitude will help make us healthy, is the antidote for every negative emotion in our lives, and that virtually every negative thought – anger, worry, fear, hostility or doubt – has at its root ingratitude.

This holds true not just in business but in life…my grandpa always said you do not have to be Happy to be Grateful.  Think about how you feel attracted to a positive person with passion- it draws friends and customers alike.

Sure, this does not come easy for everyone, or in every situation.  Here is a video by Zig Ziglar that speaks to me…make that list, I did and I can tell you, you will NEVER regret it!

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.

What are you grateful for?  Leave us a comment and let’s start a list!  🙂

Information Overload?

Well, today I learned that even too much clutter in your environment can make you fat. Go figure!

How many times have you wasted valuable minutes looking  for something because you didn’t put it where it belongs?  (I do it a lot! Just ask Scott).

So we wanted everybody to know our WordPress Blog Wax Poetic is going to be our main blogging site, with the other blogs updated here and there more at random.  We want to connect with you, and to make that easier you can always find us here!  ❤

Are YOU the Real Deal?

Are you the Real Deal?

As I look around me in this changing economy, I hear a lot of negative depressing things.  I also see several key leaders; some that are just regular people living with great integrity.  These are the people that run their lives and their businesses with a great amount of passion and relentless drive.

For me one such example is the Stephen Curtis Chapman family.

In May of 2009 the Chapman family endured one of my greatest fears, the loss of their daughter, 5 year old Maria.  They have drawn upon their love for each other and their faith to continue living example worthy lives.  The Chapman family has recently opened Maria’s Big House of Hope in China, a healing home dedicated to saving the lives of special needs orphans, stating “Love of God is pure when joy and suffering inspire an equal degree of gratitude”.

For me, this really is The Real Deal!  In these uncertain times when things can be VERY challenging, keep your eyes on the prize so to speak, and keep doing your best at what you love.

Winning the Race

Don’t be afraid to give your best to what seemingly are small jobs.  Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger.  If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.  ~Dale Carnegie
